Formula One Motor Sport

I've not had much luck with my Grand Prix heroes. My father
took me to Brands in '67 to marvel at Graham Hill and Jim Clark. Then Jim Clark died.

I was drawn back to the world of Formula 1 motor racing in 1983, and fell in love with Elio De Angelis'es perfect driving style, an ideal foil for Nigel Mansell's erratic aggression, Colin Chapman's genius, and the supreme grace of the Lotus-Renaults.

Then along came new boy Ayrton Senna, and in 1986 Elio tragically died testing for Brabham at Paul Ricard, France.

Ayrton rose to become a 3 times world champion and was acclaimed by many as the most consummate racing driver of all time.

The years of conquest between Ayrton, Alain Prost, and indeed our own Nigel were a privilege to experience.

It is a tragedy that we were deprived of a further battle of masters when Michael Schumacher emerged as the next genius of the race track, only for Ayrton to be killed in a race crash at Imola in 1994.

One of my many ambitions is to visit all 16 Grand Prix venues. This is of course not straightforward, but I think most fans could agree a "classic 16". Here's how I'm doing!

Done:

British (Silverstone, Brands Hatch)
Portugal (Estoril)
Spain (Jerez)
Italian (Monza)
French (Paul Ricard)
Belgian (Spa)
U.S.A. (Phoenix)
German (Hockenheim)
Hungarian (Hungaroring)
San Marino (Imola)
Australia (Melbourne)

To do:

Monaco
Brazil
Austria
Canada
Japan
