Grand Prix of San Marino, Imola - 1998

A very early start from Rimini on race day...

Imola

Circuit Enzo e Dino Ferrari, with Old Imola perched on the hill behind.

David Coulthard claims pole ahead of team-mate Mika.

Mika retired early on, but the McLaren advantage
was so great, the beer so strong,
and the weather so hot, that we could almost
have dozed off as David pulled away.

But with 12 laps to go, Michael started eating into
his lead, until it became almost exciting.
Too little too late however, and David came home
for a victory, the Ferraris second and third.

Alain stalks the grid, and Ralf struts.

Michael takes third, ahead of...

...Eddie in the other Ferrari, and new boy Wurz.

Michael finishing second, but not looking too delighted post-match.

The tifosi invade for the presentation, pretty happy with a two-three.

Michael was to be dogged with inconsistent fortune for the rest of the year,
but still manage to take the Driver's Championship to a Suzuka showdown,
which Mika won, his first championship.
